About
Louis Arge
Hi I'm Louis. I'm interested in building technology for consciousness and human flourishing.
Most recently I was the head of software @ Próspera, the world's only for-profit special economic zone. Owned all digital governance infrastructure.
Before that, I built my own transcranial focused ultrasound device. I wanted to play around with tFUS, got quoted $200k for basic equipment, and decided to build one myself. A few months and ~$4k later, I had a working device and tested it on myself. Some of what brought costs down:
- Built a simple 500kHz Class-C amplifier instead of buying a $2k+ linear amp; works fine for narrowband, low duty cycle signals
- Used Aruco markers + MacBook camera for head tracking instead of traditional expensive IR stereoscopic setups
- Carved the acoustic lens from polypropylene instead of TPX (which is common in imaging). Only slightly worse impedance match, but can be done cheaply and quickly at online CNC mills
- Arduino Uno for signal generation. It can toggle at up to ~500kHz - add a low-pass filter and you have a decent sine wave!
Early in my career I was a founding engineer @ Teton.ai. Built a medical device that could track patient sleep, vitals, activity, and prevent 83% of falls, all through computer vision. Grew to be Europe's biggest AI-patient monitoring startup.
- Owned all our apps across web, iOS, and Android, as well as much of our internal data tooling.
- Personally spent 20+ nights at hospitals and care-homes doing user research. This resulted in a pivot that led to product-market fit, as well as major product improvements!
- Because we were low on computer vision data for the hospital domain, I suggested we just "dress up as patients and record it ourselves." Shortly thereafter we recruited 16 elderly danes to play patients, dressed ourselves up as nurses, and captured a varied and realistic dataset of hospital data in the span of a few days.
Other projects include:
- Skyline, the #1 most used algorithmic feed for Bluesky, where you could tell the algorithm what to show you (e.g. "wholesome content only")
- dbdiff, a really nice database client
- ASMRgen, the world's first ASMR generation model (it sucked lol)
- Freestyle IDE, a tool for practicing freestyle rap efficiently
Fun facts:
- I'm an avid meditator, which has led me to be happy about ~97% of the time. That took me about 1.5 years of practice. You can learn this skill too, and I highly recommend it!
- Harry Mack taught me how to freestyle rap, over the course of 3 months in 2020.
- I'm a high school dropout.
- My blog post about Brain Fog convinced at least 5 friends to go on an elimination diet, and others to get tested for Lyme disease. Given that thousands of people read it, most of whom are not my friends, publishing it might have been one of the highest impact things I've ever done.
